TommyReviewsA classic rock opera that should be listened by anyone who is interested in the development of rock and roll. Period. While I did not buy this version of Tommy for myself,I bought it for my daughter, she loves it. I am a fan of the movie Tommy,I have loved that movie for the last 34 yrs. Like THE WALL, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, the record tells a story, through music and characterization, and achieves this quite well. Not to mention the musical content of the record, which also works. A real departure for the WHO at this point, because they were struggling to right hit singles, and weren't really a hit singles type of band. They were always more of a live band, and this record worked well for them when played live. I have received two albums; returned the first album because CD#2 would not be recognized by any of the four CD players I put it in. I am sending back #2 for the same problem. I would think others have had this issue and it is not corrected. I will send #2 back for a refund. Pete Townshend's finest hour. Probably the best and most important piece of rock music ever written Average Rating:![]() |

Beastie Boys DVD Video Anthology - Criterion CollectionReviewsMostly home made type of videos with Beastie humor. I enjoy the music more than the video but together they are a mildly entertaining. If you like Beastie Boys you can't go wrong getting this DVD. The fact that this collection was released by Criterion is strongly indicative of the quality of the music videos within. The Beastie Boys have made so many great videos of their career that they fill two DVDs - only Bjork can rival them in terms of volume and quality. Now they're compiled in this awesome package from the best DVD studio in the world. The two criticisms this collection regularly receives are, despite what some might say, not the fault of Criterion. The videos from "Licensed to Ill" are missing because that album was released on a different label and for some stupid reason, they didn't want to license the rights to Criterion. No surprises there - record companies do this sort of thing all the time. The second criticism deals with the censoring on these videos. Reviewers are incorrectly blaming Criterion for this. Just the smallest amount of research reveals that basically every music video is made censored. This makes sense, as they're made for TV, which has strict guidelines as to what is permissible to say. It's not like these videos have been censored. They were never UNcensored. It's not like there are some "original" "uncut" music videos sitting in a vault somewhere. Yeah, it's unfortunately that the music gets changed, but that's more the fault of the FCC than anything. Anyone who is thinking of not buying this simply because some words get bleeped out doesn't understand how music videos work. Personally, I've never thought of the Beastie Boys as particularly profane, and thus, it's not distracting to me at all. It's not like censoring gangsta rap where every fourth word gets cut. Setting aside these issues, lets look at who will find this collection interesting. Many people buy whatever Criterion releases, because whether they know the film or not, they know that Criterion only releases top quality material. This is a little bit different because it's dealing with music that I would guess the typical Criterion collector who is a fan of Bergman and Godard is unfamiliar with. Criterion deals mainly in the art film tradition, so the presence of a popular music group may give people second thoughts. My view is, these are such great videos that they make the collection interesting, even if you're not a fan of the music. That is, unless you find the music unpleasant. The Beastie Boys have a unique style which involves a lot of a lot of yelling. It's not particularly obnoxious, but I could see how it would grate on some viewers. The music is actually very good, not just as hip hop, but as music in general. The best advice I can give is to listen to some samples online and if you don't hate the music, you're probably going to enjoy the videos. I wasn't a huge Beastie Boys fan myself until I saw their music with these incredible videos and finally it made sense to me. They're just that good. Love this collection, except that it is censored... beeps all over the place and it kinda ruins it for me. I have been a beastie fan since the beginning, and this is a bit of a disappointment. Criterion should be ashamed for this, as they don't even give you the option of turning the beeps off. Seems this release doesn't follow Criterion's commitment to preserving the integrity of the artist's work. would have given 5 stars if it weren't censored I'm just writing to echo all the praise for these discs. It's a great collection and the audio features are very extensive with all the remixes. NOTEWORTHY: all songs are CENSORED, shame on you, Criterion. There is worse language in PG rated movies and TV sitcoms than what gets bleeped out of all the music here. And I don't just mean the occasional 'f' and 's' words, I mean even the mildest curse words are bleeped out. Why? There's no reason whatsoever to alter the music on a DVD release, especially with a publisher like Criterion who have prided themselves on presenting films as they're originally made. I think the fact that the packaging doesn't specify that all content has been censored is misleading not cool, and I'm only pointing this out to others who might think it's noteworthy when deciding whether to buy this. 3 stars for content, -2 stars for creating a bleeped DVD just so Walmart will stock the title. When I found this compilation will be released by criterion I could not believe it, that means they will treat the videos with the best quality and extras, and i was not dissapointed. The extra material is great, video angles and mixes that can be switched anytime during the video play. I remember back when Sabotage was released and frequently played on Mtv back on '94, they were and still are the coolest dudes. Truly recommended if you like the band. By the way what happened to the very first videos? Average Rating:![]() |

Beverly Hills Cop [VHS]ReviewsAxel Foley is a Detroit cop who after the murder of his friend travels to California to investigate and track down the killer, who he believes operate an arts dealership as a cover in Beverly Hills. He teams up with two reluctant detectives from the Beverly Hills police force who were supposed to keep a watch on him, especially after seeing Foley's different approach to tackling the situations which is not acceptable by the chief of the local police. This movie has the combination of clever comedy and the ingredients from harder action thrillers that ensured Beverly Hills Cop status as a cop comedy classic. Beverly Hills Cop is an instant classic, its funny, its unflinching, and it involves some violence. What else could you ask for? Axel Foley, played by Eddie Murphy, is a Detroit cop that does things his own way. He comes to Beverly Hills to find the killer of his late friend. From there, Murphy steals the show. From the classic bannanna scene, to just him laughing, this movie is just plain funny. John Ashton and Judge Reinhold are almost like cheerleaders, rooting Murphy on (in a good way), and they do a great job. Enough Said? Missed this huge 80s hit until now. It's .... terrible. Except for Eddie Murphy's laugh, why was this movie a phenomenon? I don't get it. Features the usual Keystone Kops take, but this time, it's the BH police force made to look like they wouldn't know crime if it hit them over the head. Completely unrealistic right to the end when the police chief doesn't believe the ultra violent shootout that just happened was called for. I laughed twice: when one of the villains gets thrown into a salad bar, and when Eddie Murphy stuffs three bananas into a squad car's tail pipe. The rest? Sterile at best. Paramounts BEVERLY HILLS COP is a hilarious movie and was probably one of Eddie Murphy's greatest filsm of all times, especially since he knew how to be funny with his wisecracks, jokes, and body language, especially when the conniving Detroit police Detective Axel Foley(Eddie Murphy) travels to good ole Southern California to track a killer who was involved in a homicide that took place in Detroit, Michigan where Foley works and lives at, even though Axel was working out of his juristiction, which contributed to Axel bumping heads with Beverly Hills P.D., especially with Capt. Andy Bogomil(Ron Cox), Sgt. John Taggart(John Ashton), and Detective Billy Rosewood(Judge Reinhold) when he meets them for the very first time. Watching this movie also makes me want to go to Beverly Hills too, especially since I grew up in a small hot & boring desert community with very little to do for fun or entertainment, which in my case was the Imperial Valley, since I grew up. As a matter of fact, I was 12 years old in the 6th grade at Desert Gardens Elementary School in my hometown(El Centro, CA) when this movie was released in the movie theatres back in January of 1985. This is a very funny movie with a lot of action and suspense. Eddie Murphy does an awesome job as Axel Foley. Axel doesn't play by the rules and is very reckless. When his friend is killed, Axel takes vacation time and goes to Beverly Hills to investigate. Axel uses his antics to get his way and ticks off the bad guys and the Beverly Hills Police Department. He becomes friends with Detective Billy Rosewood and Detective Sergeant John Taggart who follow him to see what he's up to. If you love action, comedy, and buddy cop classics, you'll love BEVERLY HILLS COP!!! Average Rating:![]() |

While its sequels were formulaic and safe, the first Beverly Hills Cop set out to explore some uncharted territory, and succeeded. A blend of violent action picture and sharp comedy, the film has an excellent director, Martin Brest (Scent of a Woman), who finds some original perspectives on stock scenes (highway chases, police rousts) and hits a gleeful note with Murphy while skewering L... |

The King and I (50th Anniversary Edition)ReviewsThis is the most beautiful love story still around today. A love that can never be.. The music and dancing is wonderful and beautiful to watch.Costumes and the colors are amazing. You will fall in love with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. Unlike most musicals, this isn't a love story (although it has one as a secondary plot); it's the story of two strong-minded people struggling to reach mutual understanding and respect across a cultural chasm. In 1862, Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr) arrives in Bangkok, with her 12-year-old son Louis (Rex Thompson), to take up a position as teacher to the Siamese King's flock of children. She and the King (Yul Brynner) immediately butt heads over the issue of the "brick residence adjoining the palace" which the King has conveniently forgotten promising her, and Anna is ready to turn right around and go back to England, but when she meets the children, including Crown Prince Chulalongkorn (Patrick Adiarte), she's smitten and stays. As time goes by, though the house problem remains unresolved and there is often friction over Anna's teaching and over such cultural roadblocks as the existence of slavery (the King's harem includes Tuptim (Rita Moreno), a "gift" from the King of Burma, who is pining for her lost love, Lun Tha (Carlos Rivas)), the two of them slowly begin to appreciate each other, and Anna becomes the king's sometime secretary, confidant, and even advisor, culminating in a brilliantly successful banquet for Sir Edward Ramsay (Geoffrey Toone), the Queen's personal plenipotentiary. But when Tuptim and Lun Tha plot to run away together, it begins to look as if all Anna and the King have gained will be lost. The high point of the movie is, of course, the inimitable Brynner, recreating (at the age of 36) his original stage role of five years before (he had had one other film appearance and a long list of TV credits, but it was this part that brought him wdespread fame, and he so made it his own that it's impossible to think of it as being played by anyone else). Like the much darker and more tragic The Last Samurai (Two-Disc Special Edition), which is also about an Oriental country struggling to join the modern world, the story is based on fact: King Mongkut (the name by which he was generally known outside his own country) was passed over for the throne in favor of a half-brother, devoted his life to religion, travelled all around the country as a monk, and became the first abbot of Wat Bowonniwet before he ascended the throne in 1851, aged 47; he embraced Western innovations and initiated the modernization of Siam, both in technology and culture, which earned him the epithet "The Father of Science and Technology." Kerr plays off her co-star perfectly, and co-stars Terry Saunders, who plays chief wife Lady Thiang, and Martin Benson as the Kralahome (a sort of Prime Minister) provide a background motif ranging from loyal helpfulness to jealous dislike. The sets and costumes are gorgeous and the music everything you'd expect from the talented and prolific team of Rodgers & Hammerstein, although several good songs from the stage version ("My Lord and Master," "Shall I Tell You What I Think of You?," and "I Have Dreamed") were inexplicably left out of the film score. Perhaps the most delightful sequence comes near the end, as Anna teaches the King to polka and they swirl joyously around the polished floor of one of the palace's many rooms--which makes the ending, when it comes, all the more pognant. (As many times as I've seen it, this remains one of the very few movies that can make me tear up.) If you have any liking at all for musicals or classic movies, this is one you must have in your DVD collection. I have always loved this movie and it was just as wonderful as I'd always remembered it was. they just don't make them like this anymore. This movie was one of the best ones I have seen. The quality of the DVD was excellent. JUST AS REMEMBERED SO MANY YEARS AGO AND FORMATED IN DVD FORM. THANK YOU! Average Rating:![]() |

Center Stage (Special Edition)ReviewsI loved this movie. As a dancer, it was great to watch some stars I had seen perform on the stage. The story line was a little on the weak side, but I wasn't really watching for the story. It is a great movie for teenage girls. Juliet Simone and Maureen, you are looking at Susan Jaffe and Marianna Tcherkassky. Ethan Stiefel is in 3 shots. He is not in one scene in its entirety. The rest? They are ALL drag queens, including the confused heroine. This movie is not a biopic. It is a professional army at war with the United States. As to the dancing? There is no dancing. Ethan Stiefel weights them in alacrity. [...] I first watched this movie in pieces on YouTube. I liked it and rented it several times, then decided to buy it used. A nice story, with realistic characters and plots. Not too "Hollywood." The professional dancers like Ethan and Julie really add something special to the movie. Definitely a must-have for any dancer. A much better than average ensemble movie. What is outstanding about the movie is the dance sequences.....the nighclub sequence as well as the ending sequence where is doesn't get much better than that. Excellent dancing and directing. Very happy with item, fast shipping, item was as described in ad and very pleased over all with purchase. I would buy from this seller again. Average Rating:![]() |

Dangerous MindsReviewsFormer Marine LouAnne Johnson leaves an officer's commission and a nine-year military career to pursue her dream of becoming an English teacher. But while earning her credentials at a Northern California high school, she is assigned to a group of students who change her life forever. And she changes theirs. Although each of her charges exhibits a seemingly inpenetrable facade, these kids are desperate to connect with someone who cares about them. As their new instructor, the feisty Ms. Johnson defies all the rules, creates her own curriculum and instructs this class of tough, inner-city teenagers from college-level texts. This is ultimately a feel good movie with much humanity; one of those movies that you really ought to see. This is one of those movies you watch over and over. I received it in perfect condition. And in the time stated. At a great price. I haven't seen Dangerous Minds for ages, apart from bits on TV on holiday, which I wasn't really paying attention to at the time. When I found it on DVD for cheap, I bought it. As soon as I put this DVD on, and it started up, I remembered all the characters instantly. I even remembered what happened in the movie. But really, there's nothing new here that hasn't been done a thousand times before, and better. The story is pretty generic, and is almost a direct copy of what happens in Sister Act 2. Even the cast look pretty similar. A former marine comes in to teach the 'bad' kids, who have managed to be unteachable up until now. She teaches them karate (without actually touching them of course), teaches them a few choice phrases about choosing or wanting to die, and boom, she's the best teacher ever. The kids are pretty stereotypical too, there's the choice bad guy, with the girlfriend who wants to protect him, the other bad guy who wants to be bad, but has a good family behind him and all the other stereotypes you can think of. Any fans of Hackers will recognise Renoly Santiago from that. What's shocking is that Wade Dominguez, who played Emilio (the bad guy), actually died at the age of 32 in 1998, from respiratory failure. I couldn't believe it when I read that. The only real lasting impression that Dangerous Minds will leave you with is the song that was everywhere when it was out "Gangster's Paradise". Otherwise, it's pretty forgettable. the best real life drama I have seen in years it is one of my favorite movies it took some time to find it on DVD have worn out the VHS tape I had of this movie. Louanne Johnson really needs to stop patting herself on the back for her work as a "teacher." She was not a teacher - she was a SUBSTITUTE teacher, one who quit after only a few months. People like Luanne Johnson are the exact OPPOSITE of what students, especially urban students, need. She was just one more person who walked out on them. The real heroes in education are those who stay in the fight with their students, managing to balance their passion for education and dedication to their students with the necessary evil of jumping through beaurocratic hoops. This movie is a farce. Average Rating:![]() |

Daily Writing Prompts:Grades 1-4: Teacher ResourceReviewsDaily Writing Prompts is a delightful find for those of us who are looking for a guide to help our students become better writers. Its purpose is simple...to help children become better writers by providing them with daily practice and a connection to literature. Sounds great, right? Well, it is...if you can come up with an interesting variety of topics on your own. This book offers a treasury of writing topics, most with accompanying literature recommendations, right at your fingertips. The idea is to develop themes and topics that are connected with literature we see everyday. Connect the topic with the titles! Now why didn't I think of that? The author has also included a section of "mini-lessons" to help tune up the grammatical conventions associated with good writing. I found this to be a crucial element to our success. If students don't have the right tools, or components for writing (such as understanding the various parts of a sentence and how sentences work together), then how can we expect them to write fluently? These short, quick mini-lessons can be repeated often so that the skill is reinforced over time. All in all, I found this to be a very helpful and entertaining reference tool for our homeschool. If you want your child to become a better writer while helping them to become better readers, then this will be a perfect addition to your library. Average Rating:![]() |

Daily Writing Prompts makes writing practice a breeze! There are almost 200 reproducible, ready-to-use writing ideas, enough for every day of the school year. SIMPSONS ROAD RAGE - PS2ReviewsThis game would be better if there was a crash mode like burnout 3 .And there is not even a racing mode. This game's multiplayer is kinda good but there is alot of glitches. The singleplayer is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to easy! There are only 10 missions.I would reecommend not buying this game and buying a good game like Burnout 3:Takedown! This game is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It rocks! It is about Mr Burns buying the bus transit system and you have to earn 1,000,000,000 dollars to buy it back. It is almost like crazy taxi. Except waaay more violent. My friend thinks this game sucks because he is reeeeeeeeealllllly picky about video games. Buy this game! I have "The Simpson's Road Rage" game and it rocks!! I like it because the picture's are great and also I really like the music. I have earned 16 car's out of 17 and plan to get that one soon. I am only on the second level but still having a lot of fun with it. By Cooper Groenhof Thi video game is my video game on PS2! I got my PS2 for Christmas and this game about a month after. It is a cool game and if you like the Simpsons and driving, this is your best bet! P.S. Downtown is my favorite place to drive in, it has all these cool ways to get to the place you wanna go. If you want to drive around Springfield with Mr. Plow, Barney's the Plow King, Snake's Lil' Bandit or Marge's Canyonero this is the game for you. Its silly .. USAopoly Family Guy Trivial PursuitReviewsnot for kids this is based on a show for adults would be more fun with a board for sure Ok first, this game is TRAVEL SIZED. No one has mentioned that and I was really disappointed when I received it. Returned it right away. Until they release a Family Guy Scene It game (hint hint Seth) this is the next best thing for a FG trivia game. There is only one deck of question cards - 100 cards. I started playing with my girlfriend and after an hour we started seeing the same questions again and again. It is a fun game, the questions are moderately easy. Bought this game for a 3-week family trip to MN last summer, and we played it a lot. My husband and I and the 5 kids are all big fans, so it's a great game for us. And my "educational" rating is due to the fact that there is a lot to be learned from Family Guy, and indeed there are many geographical questions in this set! LOL! Anyway, it is true that it doesn't take long to start getting repeat questions, so I would implore the makers to issue some booster packs, hopefully before next summer! :-) Average Rating:![]() |
