Wild Style (25th Anniversary Edition)ReviewsThis was a rare find.... Good product / Fast Shipping! Will buy from them again. Thank you! For my boyfriend who grew up in NYC during heavy hip-hop times, this film is a must have. This movie is alright. It's great to watch only because it's from that era. If you're really looking for a good film, watch Style Wars. That is a classic and it goes into depth about graffiti, breaking and hip hop. The acting in this movie sucks, but it's kind of cool to see some of the renouned artists. Rent on Netflix and only buy if you like to collect stuff from this period. Wild Style is considered to be the first hip-hop film. Rhino has released a special 25th anniversary edition of the film. "Wild Style" was before "Breakin'" and "Beat Streat." This 1982 film was about the hip-hop culture of early 1980's New York. The movie filmed in the South Bronx captures that gritty graffiti era that birthed rap music. The filmed starred Fab Five Freddy, The Cold Crush Brothers, Grand Master Flash and The Chief Rocker Busy Bee. The film really captures the graffiti culture of that era. The 25th anniversary edition includes new bonus features and interviews. If you are a fan of the annual VH-1 Awards Show, "Hip-Hop Honors," pick up "Wild Style" and school yourself on old school hip-hop. Still a great hip hop movie...but I would've liked to see what hit the cutting room floor...behind the scenes...more of the performances that were editted. The reunion was nice but even that was too short. Hey Mr. Ahearn, do the fans a favor and put out a DVD of JUST THE PERFORMANCES!!! That DVD would fly off of the shelves! Average Rating:![]() |

Through the Years of Hip Hop, Vol. 1 - GraffitiReviewsA good documentary of historical value. A well made effort in describing the essence of what we call hip hop in it's morden day form. It's flashback of occurances and events shows an unification of innovation in inner city life and it's youths revelation of how America defines itself today. Looking forward to all 4 Hip Hop years. This one rocks out. I like this one, really! It's way back when, way back before people knew where spiderman came from. Okay, maybe not that far back but it's getting the videos and seeing people in a movie. These people at one time were on for a nation of millions. It was this or nothing. It's like seeing a tag or fill in for your very first time! For those who were around during th early years of hip hop before it's "trashification" with gangster crap (though recent releases have shown some improvement) or who are just interested in this era, this is very good. The documentary on graffiti really gets it right when it sets up what it was like to be a 70s child in the pre hip-hop era (having been one myself). The videos themselves range from interesting to good. A crude but appealing video of the Crash Crew gives you a good idea of what early hip hop was like. Then we have the classics of the era such as Run-DMC's Rock Box, Dana Dane, Rob Base, the young Queen Latifah, etc. The there's De La Soul's classic posse video "Buddy" which also includes a cameo by the young Latifah. This is a sweet video. I love the unity and positivitiy it represents among the Long Island-New Jersey rappers of that time. Too bad rap did not stay on this level. But in either case, watch it, learn, and enjoy. First of all I'd like to respond to the cat from England who has no clue of what real Hip Hop culture is. Hip Hop culture is not just the four elements of Hip Hop,(Writing, B boying, DJing/Beatboxing,mcing)Its about a culture created by kids in the inner city streets. The first part of the documentary IS related because the title of the series is called "Through theyears of Hip Hop," So it is important to show people how this culture began! Then they give you a tight piece on Graffiti told by the masters. This project was praised by Zulu Nation for its authenticity as well as other pioneers. I follow Hip Hop and I know what's good for the culture and this DVD is an excellent addition to other classic productions like StyleWars and Wild style. And yes Xmas music is real Hip Hop and so is "Through The Years." Learn the culture before you comment! About time someone did a proper history or hip hop, graf and breakdancing. Unfortunately, this isnt it. It says 90 mins on the back and it only lasted 30 mins. The first 10 minutes was unrelated ... and [terrible] christmas music. The rest of the program was close ups of photos from Subway Art and Spray Can Art. I dont want to see the back of someones head for half of the program. If you want a proper history of hip hop, get Style Wars, Wild Style or anything else. This is awful and a complete waste of money. The music videos were a strange collection, but monie love still [disappointed me]. Average Rating:![]() |

Beat StreetReviewsIf you see the movie, you will understand the title for this review! I had this on video (taped from TV, as alot of us used to do as kids!) and I watched it until the tape unraveled in the VCR. It's a bonafide classic for anyone who grew up in this era. This movie is a true hip hop classic that defined an era in my childhood. I have been looking for a particlular song that was played briefly in the movie, but it was never released on the soundtrack. I am not even sure of the name, but it is from the scene at the Burning Spear night club after the Christmas show performance. Kenny starts slow dancing with Tracy to this song, but I only have some of the words but no artist. Can anyone HELP me find out who sings it? These are some of the lyrics: "Well alright, just look at you now Nobody knows how you got it, but everyone says kid you got it, so now that I know that you got it, we can make it right. You're one of the few, girl you got it, I feel it in you, girl you got it, I'm telling you now that you got it. We can make it right Yes you might say there's a chance and we're taking it, boy it's up to you, so feel that nerve in your heart that's stinging ya take this breath of my love I'm bringing ya Keep on spinning the feeling round and round Nobody knows how we got it, but everything shows kid we got it, and now that we know that we got it better do it right, better do it right, baby I know that you got it, oh it feels so good thatyou got it." Received the product in Excellent condition & arrived in good time considering it was an international post to Australia! Would recommend to anyone! Great service & really helps support trusting service regarding online shopping with Amazon:) i recieved my item with in just a few days. Thank you we love the movie! Beat Street has great music, Great Breakin' , And Tagging, but it seems as one big cheesy musical do-good movie(with artsy/ballet music and a bunch of kids who should have better parenting) and of course what's with all the berets? of course Harry belanfonte(Mr. Fidel Lover) made the flick. other than being a Great **Hip Hop/Dance Flick** with Kool Herc!! and many others! It's worth watching.(Breakin' Is Better) Average Rating:![]() |

A slightly dated but nonetheless fascinating snapshot of musical history, Beat Street is an urban musical detailing the roots of hip-hop. Set in early-1980s New York, the film focuses on the lives of a small group of young people setting their experiences against the larger backdrop of the city's burgeoning music scene... |

BasquiatReviewsSo happy to receive this Movie so promptly. It is entertaining, informative and fun to watch top notch people playing famous people in the Art World of the sixties. Basquiat's life and demise are lessons in too-sudden fame and the exploitation of African Americans, street people, and the poor. Julian Schnabel has made a subtle and artistically structured tribute to Basquiat, the kind of tribute that only a fellow artist could make. The film exposes the New York art world for some of its artificiality, power plays, maneuvers and corruption in the lime-lighting of potential money-making genius. The film, however, feeds the myth that great artists are marginally sane and creative to the extent of that marginality. An excellent choice for viewing. "Basquiat" was Julian Schnabel's first art house flick in 1996. It garnered critical attention with performances from David Bowie (as Andy Warhol), Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, as well as newcomers like Benicio del Toro, Claire Forlani, and Parker Posey. Jeffrey Wright is excellent as Basquiat, the graffiti artist who enjoyed great success, but then fell through his own excesses. "Basquiat" is visually striking. After all, director Schnabel is a painter. The screen is his canvas. This movie is nearly 15 years old, yet it retains its freshness and vigor. The vividness is as great as when it first came out. "Basquiat" is painting on the screen! I try to believe recent years to bring about so many artist-linked doco-dramas as the seventies-eighties of the last century. Depicting a struggling to survive in New York young Afro-American carved a very cluster of art/cultural community for generations coming. ...and he was incredible as Andy Warhol. Creepy silences, slow movements, that voice. I really enjoyed watching him most of all. And I read on imdb.com that he wore some of Andy Warhol's real wigs! That must have been an awesome experience, to portray someone you admired in real life. Jeffrey Wright was impressive as Basquiat, and seeing Christopher Walken is always a treat. I didn't know much about Basquiat before watching this, but I appreciate his work more after catching this short glimpse of his world, dingy NYC in the 1980s, lifestyles of eccentric artists, drugs, music, etc. Definitely watch if you're a fan of Basquiat or any of the fine actors here. In his writing and directorial debut, Julian Schnabel's film Basquiat depicts the life of graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, a.k.a. SAMO, and the turbulent period from the late 1970s to 1988, as his life was catapulted into fame and notoriety... |
