Folk Art

Folk art describes a wide range of objects that reflect the craft traditions and traditional social values of various social groups. Folk art is generally produced by people who have little or no academic artistic training, nor a desire to emulate "fine art", and use established techniques and styles of a particular region or culture. Along with painting, sculpture, and other decorative art forms, some also consider utilitarian objects such as tools and costume as folk art.

Antique folk art is distinguished from traditional art in that while it is collected today based mostly on its artistic merit; it was never intended as a category to be art for art’s sake. Examples include: weathervanes, old store signs and carved figures, itinerant portraits, carousel horses, fire buckets, painted game boards, cast iron doorstops and many other similar lines of highly collectible "whimsical" antiques.

Characteristically folk art is not influenced by movements in academic or fine art circles, and for the most part, folk art excludes works executed by professional artists and sold as "high art" or "fine art" to the society's art patrons.

Other terms that overlap with folk art are naïve art, popular art, outsider art, traditional art and even working class art. As one might expect, all these terms have different connotations; but they are all at times used interchangeably with the term folk art, for which a satisfactory definition has proven hard to come by.

these figurines are a real blessing to anyone who gets one. They were delivered in a timely manner and in perfect condition. Thanks.

i love the willow tree line. sisters by heart is perfect to be used as a gift for your sister. i chose it as a gift for my sister jilly and was going to give it to her when i saw her at easter. i have not received it as of yet. today is april 28th and it was to be here no later than april 16th. i've contacted the seller several times to no avail. if you could help me with this i'd really appreciate it. i'd rather just receive my purchase tather than receive a refund. however if this continues much longer, then a refund will be a necessity. thank you.

I gave this to a good friend and she loved it. You just cannot go wrong with Willow Tree statues.

A little trouble playing the first song in the car, but it's a used CD. Good deal.

This is a collection of the great songs from this movie. All of them are top notch recordings done by super talented singers and musicians. I never tire of hearing these tunes!

i have the movie,my friend has the movie, she said she loved the movie, but the music was her very favorite. so i bought the cds for both of us,and gave one to her for christmas.she loves it. some of the songs i like better than some others, but overall,if the movie appealed to you get this.

I was very happy with the purchase of this CD and the quick shipment, I received this package in less than a week.

I gave it to my 90 year old mother who remembers some of the songs from when she was young including "The Big Rock Candy Mountain" sung by Mac McClintock who wrote it. She used to sing this to me when I was a toddler.

1967-1970 (The Blue Album) 1967-1970 (The Blue Album)

Reviews

Just wanted a cd with good array of songs on it and this fit the bill. Plus, the price was the best I could find; but it was still to high. Received it in perfect condition and in timely manner.

'Blue' kicks off from where 'Red' finished, covering the important songs from The Beatles' later career. This includes some of the band's most ambitious and varied music, from the psychadelia of 1967 to the back-to-basics rock of 1968-9. Once again, the album does a fine job of collecting the hits, B-sides, and fan favourite album tracks from the period. All of the band's later singles are included; 'Strawberry Fields Forever', 'Penny Lane', 'All You Need Is Love', 'Hello Goodbye', 'Lady Madonna', 'Hey Jude', 'Get Back', 'John And Yoko', 'Something', 'Let It Be'. There are also some very important B-sides here: songs like 'I Am The Walrus', 'Revolution', 'Don't Let Me Down' and 'Old Brown Shoe' (a lost classic!) hold their own next to the big hits, and could easily have been released as A-sides themselves. Again, the album is rounded out by some key album tracks: 'With A Little Help From My Friends', 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds', the epic 'A Day In The Life' and the title track are obvious inclusions from 'Sgt Pepper'. 'Abbey Road' is correctly represented by 'Here Comes The Sun' and 'Octopus' Garden' in addition to the singles, while 'Across the Universe' and 'The Long And Winding Road' are obvious selections from 'Let It Be', even if they are the over-produced Spector versions. And while it's impossible to represent the sprawling White Album in a few songs, at least 'Back In The USSR', 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' and 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da' are well-known fan favourites from the album. Once again, the sheer number of brilliant songs that were merely album tracks highlights just how good The Beatles were. One thing 'Blue' also demonstrates that 'Red' doesn't is the growing songwriting skills of George and Ringo....'Something' especially holds its own against any Lennon/McCartney track. As with 'Red', this is pretty much the complete package, with complete lyrics and various late 60's photographs. Once again, any half-serious fan needs to get the original albums, but the number of non-album singles and B-sides here make 'Blue' another essential album for all Beatles enthusiasts. Five stars once again.

If you like the Beatles, the Blue Album is a must have. This album has the songs that changed the Fab Four and showed the world just what type of Singer/Songwriters they really were. I feel that this album sets the Beatles apart from all other bands on earth. Sincery, Keith

Along with the earlier collections, this is a must for Beatles fans. The transition from the early 60's music to the less traditional rock that eventually defined the Beatles as a genre and not just a group.

First, a point of reference. When this was originally released, this was the only compilation of late '60's Beatles songs available. Perfect for the 8-track player and listening to in the car on long trips. Plus, this had the version of "Let It Be" with a different guitar solo than the LP version. All the songs here were played on the radio extensively (OK, maybe not "Old Brown Shoe") and that's why this was essential back in the day. Now? Maybe not, with all the CD's released since 1987. Back in the day, it was hard to find some people who did not like the Beatles. I find it interesting to read the negative comments of Beatles and Stones CD's to see if I have been wrong all these years. I am glad that many young people (those born 1980 or later) have embraced the Beatles for the musical legacy they left us. For those who just don't like them, well, that's their opinion and that keeps things interesting if you truly in fact do not like the music. As for reviewing this CD, all the songs are great. Not a bad one here. Should be familiar to all Beatles fans. This set (along with the Red Album) is a fine introduction for someone new to rock music. Could some extra tracks have been added? Of course. But look at what happened with the releases of the 87 CDs. I guess Capitol did not want to tinker with the original product. So, for those from back in the day, or someone looking for a set of songs to keep in the car for listening, this does the trick. Hopefully this will encourage new listeners to further explore the works of John, Paul, George and Ringo, and bring a smile to the faces of those of us who were there back in the day.

Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin

Reviews

I watched it and didnt think it was that spectacular but my stepdad liked it. He didn't like how they played the unreleased songs. He said it was unreleased for a reason.

tha dvd came in the condition that it was stated and it came in a reasonable time period.

When I put Disc One of this flippin' awesome set in my laptop, the sound that issued forth from my speakers was a cacophany of appalause, and then the Hammer of the Gods began playing, and I've never had so much fun with a DVD ever, as in my life ever. I've loved Led Zeppelin since I was a kid, but I respect and enjoy them more than ever. Between Robert Plant's unmatched vocals, to Jimmy Page's legendary guitar, to John Bohnam's hammering drums, to Jon Paul Jones' insane bass. This DVD made me experience the Led Zeppelin live. I give it a 5 out of 5, you MUST BUY if you're a Led Zeppelin fan

Led Zeppelin...this two DVD set is sure to please diehard fans of the legendary kings of hard rock and will serve as a tremendous introduction to the band for newer fans. These DVDs have it all - live concert footage from 1970, 1972, 1973, 1975, and 1979, promos, press conferences, and a whole lot more. In my opinion, this DVD set is far better than The Song Remains The Same DVD. This set also contains a couple of songs from their Madison Square Garden performances on their 1973 tour that don't appear on The Song Remains The Same. These songs are Misty Mountain Hop and The Ocean. You'll see the changes that took place with their stage performances from year to year. The 1979 footage is very interesting. The band seems more mature. The total running time of these two DVDs is five hours and twenty minutes, so this will provide lots of entertainment for Zep fans. There are a total of 30 songs between the two DVDs. All of their classic material is here, and then some. If you want to see the greatest hard rock band in action, then definitely pick up this set. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham are legends who made legendary music. It is worth the extra money to own this set rather than The Song Remains The Same. Sure, that is a classic set of 1973 concert footage, but this set gives you a lot more. Very highly recommended.

The 1970 performance on disc 1 is probably the best show on here. They're practically kids!! Plant is almost shy when he talks to the audience and is much less flamboyant or polished than just a few years later at Madison Square Garden and Earls Court. Oh, but his powers are there. And dig the sideburns. They look like a garage band except that even at this early point in their career they're still so f***ing high-octane, they're more like a force of nature than anything born of a garage. Their stage attire (if you can call it that) is just the kind of ordinary clothes you might wear to the park (no dragon zoSo pants or open shirts) on a fine London afternoon (in 1970). But lurking beneath the plain exterior is the beast that was Led Zeppelin. It's incredible to watch. Without the polish and confidance of a few years under their belt and covering only stuff from the first and second album they are STILL the meanest sounding garage band this and that side of the Atlantic. Filmed in London, this is VINTAGE Zeppelin before they were REALLY big. For true Zepp fans, priceless. Their look, sound and stage show here are noticably different from Song Remains the Same. 1970 is already a vintage-like-fine-wine year for most filmed rock n roll shows and rock music in general, but to see Zeppelin doing it that year is to witness a kind of "creme de la creme" in the fledgling world of heavy metal, with it's roots still deep in the previous few decades of folk and blues whilst giving new definition to the word 'rock n roll'. Reviewers who don't appreciate this show either don't care for early 70s rock, or don't KNOW early 70s rock. This stuff is the witches brew. This is the band a year after their first album, a year after Woodstock, and the same year Janis and Jimi died. What a point in the history of music. The clarity of the sound and picture on this show make it a real treat for Zepp fans who get a chance to step back in time to see what they were doing whilst we were in diapers, or roaming around in the ether.

Where is the DVD of this concert? With all the crap on DVD we still have to watch this on VHS?

I'm shocked that this is NOT on DVD. I've viewed clips of this concert on you tube and would buy this in a heartbeat. This is a Masterpiece with great music and great artists. A piece of Rock & Roll history.

This was the night when everything fell into place. Having watched it on VHS so many times one can hope there'll soon be a release on DVD. Not many video-concerts that gives you goose pimples nowadays but this one certainly does ... Like a Hitchcock thriller the excitement builds up until Neil Young enters the stage. To me, the performance of "All Along The Watchtower" together with Booker T & The MG's is nothing but pure joy to watch - it must be "The greatest video song number of all times". Note Steve Cropper's reaction when Neil joins all the other artists for the final - he simply must take his hand with a big smile on his face ...! Six stars out of five ...

A masterful homage with too many highlights to mention. Worth any price for Richie Haven's Just Like a Woman, Johnny Winters Highway 61,Eddie Vedder, Neil Young and the first few bars of Knocking on Heaven's Door. Sinead O' Connor's defiant tribute to the "other" Bob by speaking "War" a capella was courageous and to be respected. All she did was dare to criticise the Pope, the leader of a church who have perpetuated centuries of oppression of women. The boneheads who booed her were ignorant cowards. So much for the land of the free and the home of the brave. By the way, the decision to sell the concert as dvd is not sony's. It is up to Bob. So who knows when, or if.

Excellent concert. Played so many times I m afraid to continue playing it for fear it will "wear out". Where is the DVD???????

Reunion Concert [VHS] Reunion Concert [VHS]

Reviews

If you are a Clancy/Makem fan - and you weren't fortunate enough to experience them live, then this will more than do the trick. It is their first concert since 1969 (16 years passed). Music is great, the boys are great and full of the spirit. The sheer joy of performing together after such a lengthy hiatus is evident throughout the show. Liam Clancy is passionate and excited. Paddy is stoic and intense and Tom is his usual jovial "glad to be here" self. Tommy Makem exudes the true essence of the Freeborn Minstrel Gypsy...sadly only Liam is alive as Makem passed away this year (08/08). Great DVD well worth the price.

This was recorded during the groups 1984 reunion concert tour. The original group disbanded in 1969, as Tommy Makem went on a solo career. The remaining three joined up with brother Bobby Clancy and later Louis Killen to make more successful albums together. Liam Clancy left in the mid 1970's to embark on a solo career, and then joined up with Tommy Makem to form the tremendous duo, Makem and Clancy. This DVD is great because it gives fans a chance to see some moving images of the group, since there is so little material available. The quality of the audio/video is not perfect, as Tom Clancy can barely be heard (some have said that he had Laryngitis at this concert). It also appears to have been recorded over a period of a few nights, as there are slight differences in some of the songs. However, the song selection is great and these minor problems don't deter from the great performance. This would be the last time that the Clancy's and Tommy Makem would reunite, as Tom died in 1990 and Paddy in 1998. Oh, if only a video of the New York reunion concert was available....

For those who like The Clancy Brothers, this DVD is a must. The Reunion concert took place in the mid 80s in Ireland and the recording was very good but not excellent. Regardless, to see the group in their mature years is a treat. I strongly recommend that the Reunion CD be purchased as well. It was recorded in the US and the song selection is somewhat different. The song selection on the CD is superior in my opinion [although this is a question of taste] and I rate the CD 5 stars.

The Clancy brothers and Tommy Makem always had the greatest energy. Tommy Makem plays so many instruments as they sing "Brennan on the Moor", "Irish rover", "Shoals of Herring", "Isn't it grand boys", "I'll tell Me Ma", Rocky Road to Dublin", "Carrickfergus", "The Ballad of William Bloat", "Galway Races", "Portlairge", "Jug of Punch", "Wild Rover", "Will ye go lassie go", and "Holy Ground".

Based on the utterly sublime Reunion CD, I was expecting this video to blow me away. It didn't. The performances aren't as energetic as the album, and something was wrong with the concert sound, since the video has no songs with Tom Clancy singing lead, and in fact I couldn't hear him at all in the mix.

Billy Joe Shaver rocks. The bio is very informative and personal. Wish it was a bit longer. However it does include lyrics to all the songs. Great read!

People must read this book! I must say I did not know much about Billy Joe before reading this but it is clear that this man can teach everyone the true lessons of life. Billy Joe is someone who has truly lived a life and shares it with people in his poems about it: "When you get down to it country music is essentially the blues, and my whole life the blues have never left me. I've lost parts of 3 fingers, broke my back, suffered a heart attack and a quadruple bypass, had a steel plate put in my neck and 136 stitches in my head, fought drugs and booze, spent the money I had, and burried my wife, son, and mother in the span of 1 year. "But I'm not here to complain or ask for pity. Life is hard for everybody, just in different ways. I'm not proud of my misfortune--I'm proud of my survival. For years my family kept a kept a bundle of life insurance on me because they were sure I would be the first to go. But as I write this, at 64 years of age, I'm still here and they are all gone." (p.viii) The actual story is short, but it is very weighty at the same time. You will ponder and grin at every word while he tells his life's story. And after that you will listen to every word of his poems (lyrics) as a glimpse into this mans soul. There is no need to complain about the brevity of Billy Joe's life story (75 pages). As I said It is very heavy and will surely put you into a different place in time, through the eyes of a man who has lived through it all and is alive still to tell about it; into the soul of a life that only a handful know and countless dream about.

I have been a fan of Billy Joe's for over thirty years and enjoyed getting to know the background of a unique songwriter and fellow Texan. Although short, this was an entertaining read. A bonus for songwriters like myself, is the section with the lyrics for all of Billy Joe's best known songs. A neat side note- I got my book autographed after a recent concert in Tyler, Texas. Long live Billy Joe Shaver and Texas Music.

The book was like Billy Joe's music; honest and to the point. It was great reading about his relationships with Waylon and other country stars. The lyrics to all his songs was a wonderful bonus. I only wished there was more.

The book description says 207 pages, but only the first 72 pages are the actual book. The rest of the pages are just lyrics. As one reviewer said "you can read this in one sitting". True, but for $12.97 I guess you can't really complain.

I bought this for my niece for Christmas and it was an immediate hit. I like the simple but useful packaging and the terrific price. My niece wasn't supposed to open the packaging on gifts until she got back home (to avoid messes at Grandma's house), but we found her hiding behind the tree coloring with her new stamp set! She's very happy with it, and the box it came with means she hasn't lost all of the pieces.

Was extremely dissapointed with this product....Only two ink colors that were dry. No matter how hard my grand daughter pressed down, you could barely see the print. Pencil's were cheap & barely showed color.....It went in the garbage & I will never buy from this seller again.

Bought this for my homeschooled granddaughters who are 4 and 6, and they love to do crafts as well. They are having fun with it and learning too!

Melissa & Doug 20 Animal Magnets in a Box Melissa & Doug 20 Animal Magnets in a Box

Reviews

I had been looking for some magnets to have on the refrigerator for my grandaughter to play with. The letters and number sets just had this small magnet in them that I was concerned she could dislodge and lose or worse yet accidently swallow! These animal magnets have complete coverage and what little kid does'nt love animals! Her favorite is the giraffe. I am totally satisfied with this purchase!

I gave this set and the alphabet set to my nephew for Christmas....Looks great and they are very pretty but they don't stick well at all!! My sister ended up throwing them out rather than kicking them around her kitchen--very embarassing!

It's worthy 5 star just for the fact the magnet sheet covers the entire back of the animal, there is no choking risk. I use these magnets with magnetic letters in my fridge(one animal and it's name everyday). During the day I point it to my son and we play immitating the animal sounds and reading about that animal on his books. He loves to play with them! Somedays I just have all the animals on the fridge for him to play with. He still brings everything to his mouth, so I'll comment on the durability down the road. The only thing I missed somewhere in the description of the product is that the storage box doesn't has a lid...

We bought these for my son for Christmas. He liked them at first but now he loves them. They are very useful for animal recognition. "Can you find the Elephant?" I only wish there were more animals. But 20 is plenty for a 2 year old. (Maybe I just wish they had more sets of animals - expansion packs, if you will). There is a good range of types of animals (jungle, farm, house pets). I appreciate how tangible they are for him. Secretly, I like to arrange them on the fridge too... and put the letter magnets with the animal they go with (L with Lion, for example). But shhh.... I rated the durability at a 4 rather than a 5 because the animals ARE just stickers on the wood. And they take beatings. Some of the magnets you can see where the edges are getting pushed around (but not peeling up!). It's more like I'd rate it 98 out of 100 if I had the option. They aren't completely toddler-proof but is that even POSSIBLE?

I have a 18 month old daughter who loves magnets and with these I can also teach her about animals. they are a good size for her to handle and made out of wood and very durable. My daughter colored on the animal sticker part and the mark wiped right off. the only drawback was that the wood on the Giraffe is warped so the neck will not stick to the fridge. i would recommend this product to everyone with kids.

Average Rating:

Kids will have a wild time learning and playing with these magnetic animals. With plenty of colorful, generously-sized wooden magnets and classic animal shapes, children are sure to be engaged and entertained for hours...
