The Standard Deviants - Shakespeare Tragedies - Othello, Macbeth, King LearReviewsAs the title of the review suggests, I have used this text has an introductory / revision entry point for some of my English students who were struggling to access the plays. The style and content of the DVD is generally energetic in a low budget sense. More importantly, the DVD managed to provoke a few laughs to engage the audience as they watched and motivated them to think more deeply about the play/s. Whilst this DVD is not the answer to anything, it could be another useful complimentry educational aid if used in the appropriate way in association with other resources. Othello I thought this dvd was a little bit expensive. Although they focused on Shakespeare's classic tragedies like Othello, Macbeth, and King Lear to approach high school level without overdoing it. Shakespeare can be rough for most people but he's still popular among actors, actresses, and directors in the theater. Shakespeare is still seen as the role model for which all other playwrights follow to succeed him. The Standard Deviants should have used better actors and actresses in this dvd series. Not that they didn't do an adequate job but we don't know them or their backgrounds. We assume that when we see Shakespeare on stage that it should be with talented professionals, somebody familiar. The quality was still good though. I would have liked to have a compact disc to accompany it on the computer for the teacher like myself. I'm a high school English teacher and I thought it was amazing how this video covered every single element of the plays that I focus on, and added a few other insights that I now have added to my plans. Covers language use, symbolism, characters, plot, irony, etc. For Lear includes an interesting bit about how the play incorporates elements of the Fairy Tale. Genuinely interesting from start to (nearly 2 hour long) finish. I really enjoyed this take on Shakespeare, mainly because it breaks down these plays in ways that help you gain an understanding and appreciation of just how good the Bard's work was. I would highly recommend them to anyone studying the plays or just a casual fan. Fun, fun style and good looking and funny actors. At school I hated Shakespeare, I hated the person who 'taught' it to me and I wasn't all that fond of some of my classmates. Which is a shame because I now love Shakespeare, I think it is something you grow into and begin to appreciate later on. However, many people are put off by school-time study of Shakespeare and as such miss out on something very special. This DVD does a great job in reducing that. I wish I had this when I was in school. Great watch, very interesting approach. Something for everybody. Average Rating:![]() |

This DVD examines three plays that reveal Shakespeare at his height as a writer of tragedies. This trio of tragedies contains Shakespeare's variations on the tragic figure: A man destroyed by jealousy (Othello), a man destroyed by ambition (Macbeth), and a man destroyed by hubris and ultimately redeemed by love (King Lear)... |

The Standard Deviants - Learn Shakespeare Tragedies - Origins & StyleReviewsIf you liked Ishkebibble, or if you think Family Circus is howlingly funyy, then waste no time-- buy this. If you acually have a sense of humor then put your forefingers in the shape of a cross and run away quickly! This is nasty, and my high school English students never forgave me for insulting their intelligence. Average Rating:![]() |

The Standard Deviants - Shakespeare Tragedies - Titus Andronicus, Romeo & Juliet, HamletReviewsIf you are looking for something dry and unentertaining this is it. However, it does present educational looks at these plays, it is not very entertaining. The DVD doesn't have anything the video doesnt, so dont waste your money. Average Rating:![]() |

This DVD examines three of Shakespeare's tragedies: his first, his most beloved, and his most famous. The Standard Deviants explore Titus Andronicus, Shakespeare's first tragedy - a flawed, but promising play - to highlight what makes a great tragedy, and to reveal that even Shakespeare had to learn his craft... |

Stoned, Naked, and Looking in My Neighbor's Window: The Best Confessions from GroupHug.usReviewsI am purposely reading only a few confessions a day. If I read all of them straight through the fun will be over too soon. When my wife saw this come in the mail (the cover set off alarm bells) she was like, what is this? (with a somewhat concerned look). I said don't worry. I started reading to her, and we have been laughing every since. We only read two or three confessions a day. I would imagine if you read it straight through it might be tedious, and you would certainly become desensitized. But man, this book has been very entertaining! There are some confessions that are like... ummmmm okay.... but most are humorous or strange in some titillating funny way. I wouldn't say it is a children's book, but I suppose you know that from the title. Anyway, fun book. We even read some to my 80 year old grandmother and she laughed until no sound was coming out of her mout, she was shaking, and tears streaming out of her eyes. The amount of giggles this book has given me, it was worth every cent. Very similar to PostSecret, although the confessions are written in an e-mail format as apposed to secrets written on the back of homemade postcards. I enjoyed this book very much, and found myself relating to many of the stories. I won't quote it, but I've read it many a time in public places to my friends. The book (and the website) are possibly in vein of the trend that is taking over the pop culture. Post Secret, Found and the like have all published confessions and pieces of crap that people write. We all want to know what's going on in other people's mind and this is the book that makes it possible to see the funny, sad and downright disturbing thoughts. If you didn't like the book, then that's your problem. And due to the title, it's obvious that the book isn't meant for children or young teens--so parents, use common sense. But if you want to save yourself a few dollars (people are greedy and the price listed in used and new is more than i paid for it when I bought it off Amazon) I'd suggest you just log on to grouphug.us Some of the confessions are good but 90% of them are boring crap tha you hear everyday. Buy it if it's dirt cheap. This book is an exciting ride of emotions. You tap into the secret lives of complete strangers. It's fun not even knowing their real name and yet you know their deepest darkest secrets...it could be written by someone you even know. :) How exciting! 5stars! Average Rating:![]() |

Graffiti Lives: Beyond the Tag in New York's Urban Underground (Alternative Criminology)ReviewsRemember that the graffiti scene in the 1970's and 1980's was a subculture that was very important to the evolution of the actual art that came from it (which we see in the 1990's until now). In the future "graffiti art" as we think of it today will be known as one of the few original artforms that came from the U.S.A. There are not many artforms that can say that. To me this is something important to write about and I thank the writer for understanding this. Those who critisize him are obviously ignorant to what they are talking about. They do not know what is like to come from a city where the people, architecture, and system of things tells you everyday that "you are worth nothing and do not matter". That frame of thought was the spark that started it all. This is an excellent book that delves deep into the lives and culture of graffiti artists. Finally a scholarly analysis of graffiti that's not stuck in the 1970s. Anyone doing urban ethnography should check this book out. The author's methodology appendix offers up innovative and creative research techniques. Plus, anyone following Shepard Fairey or Banksy will appreciate the discussion of the career trajectories less well-known writers take as they move away from the street. I wonder if Mr Snyder would like people to "tag" his house... Why not organize a group of 'fans' to graffiti his place every day? I bet he would love it! =) He does not care about all the people that has to remove it from their properties and even loves the 'thrill' of being a vandal. I think someone had a very over-protective mom back in the day! =) Grow up buddy! You are a College teacher now! The only positive thing that I got from it was this: "No one wants to spend time and energy to do graffiti that will be painted over in twenty-four hours, because there's no fame" Just a reminder for the rest of us about how to deal with this issue. On the sides of buildings, on bridges, billboards, mailboxes, and street signs, and especially in the subway and train tunnels, graffiti covers much of New York City. Love it or hate it, graffiti, from the humble tag to the intricate piece (short for masterpiece), is an undeniable part of the cityscape... |
