Watercolor Art

Watercolor (US) or Watercolour (UK) (and "aquarelle" in French) is a painting method. A watercolor is the medium or the resulting artwork, in which the paints are made of pigments suspended in a water soluble vehicle. The traditional and most common support for watercolor paintings is paper; other supports include papyrus, bark papers, plastics, vellum or leather, fabric, wood, and canvas. In East Asia, watercolor painting with inks is referred to as brush painting or scroll painting. In Chinese and Japanese painting it has been the dominant medium, often in monochrome black or browns. India, Ethiopia and other countries also have long traditions. Fingerpainting with watercolor paints originated in China.

Sanford Mr. Sketch Assorted Scent Markers 12 Pack (20072) Sanford Mr. Sketch Assorted Scent Markers 12 Pack (20072)

Reviews

This pack came with 12 nice, smelly markers. Each marker had a different smell (included are licorice, cherry, blueberry, mint, melon, mango, lemon, orange, cinnamon, grape, apple, and raspberry). Most of the smells were nice but a few made me nauseous. The back of the box claims a few things, such as the colors having a rich, true color. This is true but sometimes if the laying of the color gets too thick the paper rips (normal, 8.5 by 11 printer paper). As well as the markers having a chisel tip for fine, medium, or broad tips. This is true when you first use the markers but after a few uses the tips get a little squished in. But the colors are beautiful and the smells are a nice touch.

I use a LOT of these markers for my daycare and have never had a problem with Mr. Sketch markers drying out prematurely. They last a very long time unless a cover is left off, duh!

I am disappointed with the product, because all the markers are drying out after one use. I guess they were old, maybe sitting on the shelf for too long before I bought them.

I am a preschool teacher and I love these pens...the children especially love to use them and smell them telling what brown smells like, ect... It's also funny for all of us when there noses get colored too!

I love these markers. I remember using them in elementary school, and am now once again using them in my teaching methods classes in my fifth year of University. They last forever and are something that both kids and adults can have fun with. If you have projects for either yourself or kids in your life that require markers, buy these! You won't regret it. :)

Mr. Sketch Scented Stix Watercolor Markers, 10 Colored Markers(3610) Mr. Sketch Scented Stix Watercolor Markers, 10 Colored Markers(3610)

Reviews

These markers come in great colors, the scents are fun and make using them a delight. PLUS they last longer than other markers -- like Crayola and Rose Art markers. Even my son's school requests them specifically on the supply lists for that main reason. And, ok, sometimes our kids come home with purple or pink dots on the ends of their noses (and I have to confess I still get those tell-tale marks) but it's all worth it. Try them; they'll change your life! ;)

These markers are great! They have a fine tip that makes writing look professional, but in many diverse colors! It's fun to write with these and the variety of smells makes even the oldest adult feel young again.

Having been a long time purchaser of Mr. Sketch products I was very happy to find these. I bought these as a surprise for my oldest child who had outgrown the bigger Mr. Sketch markers but still enjoyed using scented markers. These are excellent for coloring and last many times longer than the other brands of markers.

I love the Mr. Sketch Stix Markers. I am a teacher and I use them all of the time to grade papers. They don't smear or bleed through paper.

These markers are super fun and are great quality. But watch out - the tops can come off kind of easily in a pencil bag, so be sure to check that they are on tightly to prevent ink from bleeding onto things.

Average Rating:

Fine, .8mm tip makes illustrating, lettering precise; great scents makes them fun! Non-bleeding, water-based ink. Nontoxic. Black/licorice, blue/blueberry, brown/cinnamon, green/mint, orange/orange, pink/watermelon, purple/grape, red/cherry, turquoise blue/mango, yellow/lemon.

Watercolors: Swedish Songs Watercolors: Swedish Songs

Reviews

There are several extremely fine selections of Swedish songs out there - von Otter has made one previous to this one, and there are two excellent ones from Phono Sueciae focusing on even more obscure composers than the ones represented here - but this is probably overall the best introduction to the magical world of Swedish songs dating from the first half of the 20th century. And there really are some marvelous gems in this collection of mostly lyrical, wistful, usually slightly impressionist Swedish songs, and von Otter is an outstanding advocate. The sound-world here varies from the late romantic to the neo-classical, but the various atmospheres are variations on the same abstract mood; a Northern-tinged, nostalgic, colorful and slightly distanced temper with scents of springflowers, rustles of the brook running in misty meadows, pond-ripples, gently rolling waves, longing and halflights, some with a national tinge and some with a basis in folk songs. Only rarely does any of the songs hint at the grandiose (Nordqvist's "Till havs" a fine exception), but they add up to a truly rewarding collection. Not all of the songs are masterpieces, but some of them come pretty close; especially the Aulin, Nystroem and Linde ones. And von Otter truly bring them all to life, with colors, magic and vibrance. Indeed, it's hard to imagine a more hypnotical performance. But the success of this disc is not only due to von Otter's marvelous characterizations - Forsberg's piano playing is outstandingly sensitive to details and colors and produces some magically evocative sounds. Sound quality is of course excellent as well. All in all, I'd say this is an unmissable issue, utterly magical and delightful, even though the repertoire will be completely unfamiliar to most listeners. Very strongly recommended.

Painting Barns in Watercolor [VHS] Painting Barns in Watercolor [VHS]

Reviews

I have a special love and interest for old barns, so maybe that's one reason I so enjoyed viewing this vhs by Tony Couch. I liked watching him create the finished picture, step by step. This tape will be a "keeper" for my library.

I got this video from the public library and I watched it at least 4 times. Each time I watched it, I picked up something new. It starts at the beginning sketch and then moves you step by step as Tony paints the picture on the video case as seen above. There are many valuable techniques to learn, and Tony makes it fun!. I would highly recommend this video to most anyone interested in learning watercolor or improving techniques. I gave it 4 stars because it went a little fast for me at times. I would recommend buying the DVD so you can watch clips of it more conveniently. The finished painting is lively. I like the way Tony added some interesting colors to it without becoming too noticable. A great video!!

This is an excellent collection of art lessons. I have used it in my 4th and 5th grade classes for years. Donna Hugh makes it all so easy, and kids love it and their completed art is always wonderful. Other teachers always want to borrow my tapes, and there are fishes swimming and flowers blooming all around our school.

I found this tape too expensive for the material contained. I felt the cost warrented more demonstrations of material/projects. I wouldn't order any additional tapes from this source.

The Dance of Watercolor: Beginners and Beyond The Dance of Watercolor: Beginners and Beyond

Reviews

This is a great DVD! Julie has a patient, easy manner, and it is very helpful that she gives speicfic names to the wetness of paper, brushes and paint mixtures on the palette. Her method of teaching is critical for understanding how "water" flows in watercolor. I highly recommend her other DVD as well. The Dance of Watercolor: Luminosity, Luster, Iridescence. It is another "winner"

Julie's first DVD, "The Dance of Watercolor" really got me feeling comfortable and excited about painting with watercolor - she has a gentle supportive and clear style that really comes through on the DVD, and in her demos; I am now painting with much more confidence, so I was so pleased when she came out with her second DVD, titled "The Dance of Watercolor -Luminosity, Luster, Iridescence" which really takes you to the next step of achieving those wonderful glowing effects with watercolor - you will be amazed with what the paint will do when you follow the exercises on the second DVD. I highly recommend both!

You will find this course to be a worth while investment. Many of my students and friends have gained so much enjoyment from this crown jewel of a dvd. I still love to play it for its music and excersizes that get me in the mood to work. Love it! [...]

this is perfect for the beginner watercolorist. Tells exactly how much water & pigment to use & goes through how to do the painting on the cover of dvd. excellent!

This video is a relaxed version of instruction that could complement a more advanced beginner's watercolor experience. Obviously a very talented watercolorist and instructor, Julie Cohn provides wonderfully calming examples and demonstrates accurate techniques. However, care of brushes and accurate terminology are necessary in preparatory instruction. Both are not obvious enough in this video, and would require a teacher's interruption of the video to give clarification and terminology emphasis. For example, one should never squeeze and pull on the bristles of the brush to remove water; instead, squeeze and dab the brush gently, which she does, but does not mention. The gentle rubbing to remove the water or to flatten the bristles needs clarification to ward off students' pulling out the bristles. Also, the terms glazed, layered/overlapped, opaque, transparent, and semitransparent, blended and graded, wash, hatch, stipple, and dry-brush would be on my students' "sampler" charts, along with her terms of moisture content: puddle, dot, dash, and pile. Julie Cohn's emphasis on achieving effective application using moisture control makes this relaxing video useful to an educator on a personal talent improvement level, and provides diversion from the stilted, but required discipline of the classroom: possibly a good application review prior to first painting. I will definitely use her beneficial idea of dancing with watercolor.

The Dance of Watercolor: Luminosity, Luster, Iridescence / Advanced Beginners and Beyond The Dance of Watercolor: Luminosity, Luster, Iridescence / Advanced Beginners and Beyond

Reviews

I have always admired that quality of a beautiful watercolor painting that seems to glow from within and have wonderful qualities of light and I just assumed that you had to have years of painting experience to achieve these results. Not so!! Julie's three demonstrations on this DVD teach you the techniques to create paintings with beautiful qualities of Luminosity, Luster and Iridescence, and the gentle, clear instructions and demonstrations all make it so easy to follow. You will be thrilled with the new direction that your paintings will take after following the lessons on Julie's latest wonderful DVD.

Julie's friendly, engaging teaching style make this DVD a wonderful tool for learning about luminosity, luster and iridescence when painting with watercolors. The DVD is also packed with lots of great tips on brush choice, paint color mixtures, water consistency and use of various tools in painting. Julie's mastery of technique, along with her deep knowledge of art history combine to give both the beginning painter and the more advanced painter lots of ideas and information. Julie has developed some brand new ways to bring out the qualities of Luminosity, Luster and Iridescence in paintings and clearly demonstrates these new methods through the use of photography, live painting demos and examples of actual paintings. Julie has a warm, approachable manner which makes learning these new techniques a joy.

I really enjoyed and learned a lot watching "The Dance of Watercolor: Luminosity, Luster, Iridescence"! It is an excellent follow-up to the first DVD that I purchased last Spring "The Dance of Watercolor". While Julie's first DVD was great for my young daughter and I to receive an introduction to the fundamentals of watercolor, this DVD is an outstanding set of lessons on how to improve your technique. I felt truly enlightened by her discussions and demonstration on how to achieve Luminosity, Luster, Iridescence with watercolors. For anyone interested in getting an insight on how the 'Masters' approach watercolor and lighting, I highly recommend this instructional DVD.

Julie's instruction is easy to follow and her love of watercolors is very evident in her choice of words and expressions. Her measured and deliberate manner of presenting her "lessons" makes it easy for the eye to take in the images and the brain to wrap itself around her message. The experienced watercolorist as well as the absolute beginner can profit from viewing Julie's excellent presentation of three of the fundamentals of watercolor painting: Luminosity, Luster and Iridescence. We can hope to master these with Julie's help. Well done Julie.

Susan Harrison-Tustain's One-on-One Watercolor Workshops Susan Harrison-Tustain's One-on-One Watercolor Workshops

This woman i s wonderful artist but what makes this dvd special is that she is a wonderful teacher as well. Her dvd collection has helped me take my art to a new level. She is forthcoming about her techniques and her choice of materials. No secrets here... and that is the most important thing in a teaching dvd. She also shares her studio, and her inspirations. This particular dvd is a cherished addition to my collection and I will watch it many times throughout the years.

I am trying to find a good application method as I develop my style. I would love to master the realist style one day, but for now, I will try very hard to emulate Susan's methods. I would recommend this cd to any intermediate or advanced watercolor artist developing different methods of application. It shows what can be achieved with a very different method than I was taught when I took my watercolor classes. Pay close attention to the supplies, especially the use of transparent watercolor. I have never used them before, so this cd was a revelation. I loved the finished work that Susan does. It is almost like magic watching her do her stuff.

I purchased Glorious Garden Flowers at the urging of my grandmother to try out watercolor. Ms. Harrison-Tustain's introduction touched me and resonated with me. My style is not loose and abstract - and neither is hers. I enjoy the detail that makes a painting come to life. Ms. Harrison-Tustain's book explained how to create the important detail that makes my watercolors stand out from others. I followed up with her DVD's and have found that her method or instruction of watercolor painting is applicable to all types of subjects. This book will change your way of looking at watercolor washes - making your subjects glow - and it will help you understand the why watercolor works like it does! I can honestly recommend buying two sets, you will wear out the first watching it over and over again! Enoy the journey, Heather

this was the first time I have been game enough to purchase on line. I must say the service from Amazon was very professional .I recieved my DVD as promised on time and in excellent order. My purchase of the Susan Harrison DVD is fantastic.I will be buying more for an art group I belong to. thank you Sue S

This is a major break through for me in watercolor. I've learned so much on how to control the medium and I'm completely comfortable for the first time ever in watercolor. Great instructions. If you want a technique that is realistic but definitely a piece of artwork buy this DVD and paint your heart out. Happy painting one and all.

These are by far and away some of the most beautiful cards I've ever seen (and I love to send cards, send dozens each year). They are definitely targeted toward women, however, because they are very feminine. I love impressionism and these cards remind me a great deal of Monet paintings or even some of Georgia O'Keefe's lovely flower works only a little more muted. Each card is front, back and inside just lovely. Also, each envelope is beautiful as well. You can be sure that whomever receives one in the mail will be excited to open the pretty envelope and then will not be disappointed to see the lovely card. Highly recommend.

THE CARDS ARE BEAUTIFUL, HOWEVER THE ENVELOPES COULD BE BETTER AS TO NOT QUITE BE THE SAME DEPTH IN COLOR AS THE CARDS ARE. YOU NEED MORE ROOM FOR ADDRESSES.

Leanin' Tree Art of Judy Buswell Greeting Card Assortment was a perfect gift for an elderly aunt who lives in northern Minnesota (burrrrr).
